So, I’m a big music fanatic. I think how bands choose to represent themselves is all important. One band I really respect for their thorough documentation is Fugazi. There is a really great photo book by Glen E. Friedman called “Keep Your Eyes Open” that tracks Fugazi’s twenty years of being a band while capturing the political, post-hardcore image of the band members themselves, and of course the powerful energy of the band’s many performances. In a different medium, but in a very similar way, Jem Cohen’s film “Instrument” documents Fugazi – or actually is a collaboration with the band. It’s very meditative and experimental in some ways. There are strong scenes of people in line waiting to see Fugazi perform. The diversity of the individuals in these line ups is really interesting, as well as the deadpan approach of the filmmaker.
